When a Photo of Art Becomes Art in Second Life

Creature From The Black Lagoon (general)

Many of us take photos in Second Life to capture and share what we see. We all work hard to improve our skills and technique … at least in part to do justice to the fabulous objects and landscapes we find.

There is a whole other group of photographers. They take inspiration from the creations and channel their emotional response into their own works of art. One very talented example is Bamboo Barnes.  Her Flickr stream is on my blogroll for a reason.

I bring this up now because of the artist Livio Korobase. His installation, called Creature From The Black Lagoon↑, is currently open on LEA11 and will be until the end of July. It’s a love story told in a chaotic environment of gorgeous monsters and toys, and has been one of the most popular exhibits in this round.

Livio loves to watch how people interact with his builds; what they choose to do, how they respond, what parts they interact with, how they use what they find.

Bamboo visited the Creature and created a series of photos that expressed her reaction to his build. Livio fell in love with them, not only because they showed how his work had affected her, but also because they’re stunning pieces of art in their own right.

As a thank you he has created an exhibit of her photographs of this build and it is on display for the next two weeks. He’s done a wonderful job – the “gallery” is up in the air but fits in with the design aesthetic of the surreal ground level.

If you haven’t seen the Creature From the Black Lagoon you owe it to yourself to go visit. Even if you have been there, it’s worth another look as he keeps adding things. A new reason to drop in is this exhibit of Bamboo’s images– I have no expectation that I’ll ever be able to do what she does. That doesn’t mean I don’t get photo envy. :)

Most of the Artist in Residence Grants from this round have been extended til the end of July. This gives you two more weeks to check them out and, as always, you can get more information at the Welcome Area on LEA3.

In the meantime, the Creature and the art he has inspired, are waiting for you on LEA11.
