One Billion Rising 2014 in Second Life

One Billion Rising in Second Life (general)

OBR is back in Second Life again this year and will once again offer 24 hours of art, music, dance, awareness and community.

I’m sharing just a taste, a glimpse, a tiny portion of the giant 4-sim straddling stage for One Billion Rising in Second Life 2014.  You can find all the details, background, and schedule on their blog – but to begin with, Victor1st Mornington has outdone himself with this amazing build.

As a short, over-simplified explanation for those who aren’t familiar with OBR, this year’s theme is One Billion Rising for Justice.

Residents will gather in support of the world-wide real life campaign where men and women are invited to meet “on 14 February 2014 outside places where they are entitled to justice – court houses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustice, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes, or simply public gathering places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not.”

It worked so well last year, both to raise awareness and bring people together, this year’s event will once again feature 24 hours of music and dance. It also has art and a huge amount of information relevant both to real and virtual lives. This includes links to organizations where men and women can find help and support.

This is not a fund-raising venture. For those who wish to contribute something/somewhere, there will be information on real world opportunities to donate funds.

A new addition this year is a series of Poetry Readings at a special location on the sims from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm SLT.

If you’ve forgotten, the name One Billion Rising refers to the United Nations attempts to quantify the frequency of physical and sexual violence against women. Their conclusion, based on statistics provided by various Governments and NGOs, was that 1 in 3 women would be victims. There are more than 3 billion women in the world – so more than One Billion women will experience violence in their lifetimes from partners, strangers, and/or family members. How can we allow anyone to be unaware of that fact?

Plan to spend part of your Valentine’s Day at this amazing community event. The doors open tonight at 11:00 pm SLT, the music starts at midnight and will continue until the doors close 24 hours later.

To get you in the mood I invite you to revisit the inworld video made for last year’s event to the soundtrack of the official theme song.
