It’s Relay Weekend in Second Life

You’ve seen them I’m sure, projects and events all over the grid for Relay for Life – it’s a charitable endeavour that seems to go on all year. The way it works is that teams form and spend time raising funds as part of the larger initiative – their activities (and the larger central ones such as Fantasy Faire) are designed to generate donations for the American Cancer Society . All of the hard work culminates in the huge (in so many ways) Relay Weekend – this weekend, in fact.

It’s true that Second Life has a world-wide population – many donate their hours to the inworld organization and their dollars (and/or even more hours) to the Cancer Society of their own nation. Others just find it simpler to offer their financial support to any organization working to conquer the disease – in this case the American one.

On Relay Weekend there really is a Relay. This takes place in a variety of countries in real life as well – teams walk in shifts for 24 hours raising funds (often pledged as an amount per mile the team manages to accomplish). In Second Life the team members (wearing a scripted pedometer) walk the road around 40 sims for 24 hours.

You don’t have to be part of a team to participate in this event. You can dance to DJs and Live Performances (beginning at 2:00 pm today), enter the Silent Auction & Raffle , watch the Snail Races, and visit the Art Show & Sale↑.

You can also visit all the team campsites around the Relay track – people save their best and most creative ideas for these builds. They’re amazing! Lots of information is available at the Welcome Area, including a HUD which will let you access guides and information around the track.

If you’re lagaphobic you can watch full coverage of the event online through the RFL Telethon thanks to Treet TV, Metaworld Broadcasting, AView and Metaverse TV. Coverage will include the main RFL events that will take place over the weekend, as well as interviews with Relay For Life Chairs and Team members. There will also be one on one interviews with survivors, caregivers and relayers.

The Opening Ceremonies will begin at 10:00 am today and the first lap of the Relay will start at 11:00. the Lumineria (or Remembrance) Ceremony will be tonight at 9:00pm. You will have plenty of opportunities to donate to this cause – there are kiosks at all the activities and ceremonies, of course your participation in the Raffle, Auctions and Sales, and the camp sites have donation boxes.

There are also the Lumineria. You’ll see them along the track – donating to one  allows you to have the name of a lost friend or loved one shown in remembrance. As you’re exploring you may see one Lumineria in particular with the name of a friend of mine.

The Weekend is about awareness, celebration of survival, remembrance, activism and fighting back. It’s also a time for all those teams who have worked so hard to join together and demonstrate unity. Come and see what’s going on – I think you’ll be glad you did.
