Wherein the Intrepid Explorer Encounters Homicidal Skeleton (and other) Maniacs in Second Life

Point of Derivation (moderate)

I just wanted to look around a bit.  Maybe take pictures of pretty flowers and romantic skies.  It’s not like I look for an opportunity to demonstrate yet again my complete and utter incompetence when it comes to weaponry or combat.  Maybe now I’ll remember to do more research before taking a teleport to a new destination.

Point of Derivation↑ sounded to me like something that could be interesting.  It is.  However it is also dangerous.  Much of the sim is devoted to a “single or multiplayer shooting game consisting of battling skeleton warriors that have invaded these lands“.  sigh

There is also an Arena for player vs player sparring and sword fighting tournaments using a URA meter (free in the arena) and a training area.  The good news for me is that if you’re not wearing the Grim CS Hud (also available for free) you can just explore.  The bad news is that zombies like hudless visitors.

For those interested in the game side of things you got lucky.  I saw a friend of mine being chased by a deranged skeleton and once he was not in imminent danger he gave me a few comments.  Dale↑ is very patient with my lack of knowledge/interest and inevitable death whenever I try to learn how these things work.  He also has a nice “gamer” review of this site and you’ll notice that his choice of head gear is, um well, unusual.  Maybe it’s part of his strategy.

In any case, to help me understand what is available he supplied the following information:

Killing undead, exploring the catacombs, etc. Not bad.

It’s not as slick as a game-game; I think the fun thing for me is that it’s *me* playing it, not just some game character :)

Did you see the Winter Dream part? It’s very nice looking (no monsters as far as I could tell).

there’s also a desert, with monsters

And if you fight your way through the monsters in the desert, you get to a tiny camp with power-ups AND a sexbed! :) Very SL.

The first time I saw Dale there he was carrying a gun.  The second he was using a large sword – he said the latter does more damage but you have to get much closer to the enemy.  Maybe that’s the reason for the helmet.

I like Point of Derivation↑ – not only because the landscape is really well done but also because it’s the first damage enabled location I’ve managed to visit without getting killed in the landing area.  The zombies do smell something awful though.
